Remember the controversy over the British-led Atheist campaign to place ads on buses that wrote 'There's probably no God. Now stop worrying and enjoy your life.' (which I commented upon)? Well, in what seems to be an effort that's sweeping across all of Europe, Spain has now joined in as well, with their own (Spanish) ads that speak the same wise words (excerpt below):
City buses with billboards espousing atheism have been rumbling through the streets here, prompting yowls of blasphemy from Catholic leaders. "Probably God Doesn't Exist," bleated an ad plastered last month across Bus 14, a normally sunny mode of transport past this city's harbor. "So Stop Worrying and Enjoy Your Life." The so-called godless buses — which copy a campaign begun in Britain — have appeared in Madrid and Malaga, Spain, and are planned for elsewhere in Europe. For Spain, the stunt is a provocative sign of the times. This is just part of the religious debate that's gripping Spain at the moment; meanwhile, crucifixes are being removed from classrooms at a judge's orders ('No single religion should dominate in Spain'), and all of this has understandably caused the ire of Religious leaders in the area who feel their belief system threatened. At least I'm pleased they think Atheism is a force to be reckoned with or something. Fight the power! :P I wonder if, like in Britain, Spain's Christian advocates will also plan a counter-attack with ads stating 'Join Christianity'? We'll see, although it's probably a given that they will.
