A tale of love and horror in Afghanistan

Spring is upon us, and with it come the flowers, the cool breeze that wispers through the blooming trees, the animals that had scarpered for the winter – and also the sweet nectar of love. Such was the case of two young Afghanis who, madly in love, decided to elope despite their families' disapproval. They lived happily married and in love ... until they were captured, shot and killed in front of a mosque to "discourage" others from following in their steps.

The Taleban in Afghanistan have publicly killed a young couple who they said had tried to run away to get married, officials say.

The man, 21, and woman, 19, were shot dead on Monday in front of a mosque in the south-western province of Nimroz.

They'd been traced since they tried to enter Iran; mullahs passed a fatwa (religious decree) that ordered them dead, and they were taken to a mosque – you know, a sign of Islam's intent of peace and all – and shot and killed right then and there. More proof as to how Islam encourages peace and love and that criticism towards it is quite unfounded.

The only consolation, if any, is that they died together. Too bad they couldn't have lived together for very long, but when you're trapped in the filthiest shithole on Earth, ruled by the dirtiest animals this species has ever had the misfortune and shame of being part to, you can't expect peace and justice, can you ...?
